What is The ABAM Foundation and its mission?

The ABAM Foundation is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to define the field of addiction medicine (its core content, core competencies and scope of practice); establish and accredit residency training programs; and inform the health professions, policy makers and the public about addiction medicine as a specialty. As a 501 (c) (3), the Foundation is authorized to receive tax-deductible contributions.

ABAM offers a Transitional Maintenance of Certification program for its current diplomates and a public listing of physicians who hold active ABAM certification status. In March, 2016 the American Board of Medical Specialties formally recognized addiction medicine as a multi-specialty subspecialty. Future certification examinations in addiction medicine will be administered by the American Board of Preventive Medicine.
